Getting around Puerto Vallarta can be a breeze if you know your options. Whether visiting for a few days or planning a more extended stay, here’s a helpful guide to navigating transportation in PV.
Taxis, Uber, and InDriver
Airport Taxis: Upon arrival at the airport, you’ll find 3 authorized taxi kiosks near the terminal exit doors after clearing Immigration & Customs. The companies are TPV, Aero Movil, & TRiP Vallarta. Rates vary by zone and are prepaid in Mexican Pesos by cash or credit card. Be aware that airport taxi zones differ from city taxi zones, so rates are unique to the airport. If you have extra luggage, you may need a larger vehicle, which could affect the price. (See below for the airport rate photos.)
Some travelers opt to cross the pedestrian bridge to hail a city taxi or Uber for potentially lower fares. However, this involves navigating a steep ramp, which may not be ideal if you have mobility challenges or heavy luggage. Remember, rideshares are not allowed to pick up riders directly at the airport curb.
City Taxis: The latest official taxi rates around town suggest a base fare of 50 pesos within the same zone. If traveling between zones, check the rate sheet to estimate fares. Fares to popular destinations like the Vallarta Botanical Gardens can be found on posted rate sheets. While these rates provide a general guide, it’s important to be prepared to negotiate or clarify prices before starting your trip.
If taxi drivers assist with luggage or grocery deliveries, it’s customary to tip for their extra service. Maintain flexibility and respect the driver’s vehicle—it’s their workspace. Keep wet beachwear, sand, food, and drinks out of the taxi. Pets may not be accepted, so check with the driver before boarding.
Uber: Uber operates legally within Puerto Vallarta but not in neighboring Nayarit, where service can be limited. Uber’s pricing varies based on demand, so compare rates with taxis to determine the best option. While Uber has announced pickups near the airport, this still requires crossing the pedestrian bridge, as rideshares aren’t allowed inside the airport.
DiDi: DiDi is another rideshare option authorized in Puerto Vallarta. Like Uber, comparing rates is essential for getting the best rate.
InDriver: While InDriver operates in Puerto Vallarta, it is not authorized, and reports of inconsistent service and driver issues exist. Exercise caution if using this option.
