Bay of Banderas: Fact or Fiction?
We love facts. But in Mexico, facts can sometimes be… relative.
Take the Bay of Banderas, for example. Many locals claim it’s the second-largest bay in North America, just behind Hudson Bay in Canada. Some even say it ranks fifth in the world.
Is it true? Well, it’s tough to confirm—even after deep internet dives. Still, let’s go ahead and treat that claim as part of our local truth.
How Deep Is the Bay?
Reports vary on the bay’s depth. A 1997 bathymetric study estimates a maximum depth of under 500 meters, especially near Yelapa. This is where the deepest part of a north-south canyon is located.
However, local legend tells a different story. According to some, the bay is over 1,500 meters deep. Some say this mysterious canyon connects to California’s San Andreas Fault. Others claim strange creatures and mythological beings live in the depths.
Despite the intrigue, solid information about this oceanographic feature remains elusive.
