Puerto Vallarta has a rhythm all its own — one of connection, celebration, and community. And, as a destination known for its festive LGBTQ+ life, it’s also a place where sexual health matters. At the Vallarta Gay+ Community Center, we believe talking openly about STIs and STDs (sexually transmitted infections and diseases) isn’t shameful — it’s essential.
Here’s what you need to know, whether you’re living here full-time, visiting for the season, or somewhere in between.
What Are STIs?
STIs (sexually transmitted infections) are treatable infections passed from one person to another through sexual contact. These include vaginal, anal, and oral sex, as well as skin-to-skin contact in some cases.
Common STIs include:
- Chlamydia
- Gonorrhea
- Syphilis
- Herpes (HSV-1 and HSV-2)
- HPV (Human Papillomavirus)
- HIV
- Hepatitis B and C
Many of these infections are curable, and all are treatable.
How Do STIs Spread?
STIs are spread through:
- Unprotected sex (without a condom or barrier)
- Oral sex and rimming
- Skin-to-skin contact (e.g., herpes, HPV)
- Sharing sex toys
- Blood (in the case of hepatitis B/C and HIV)
Some STIs can be spread even when there are no visible symptoms, so regular testing is essential.
What Are the Symptoms?
Some STIs show clear signs — others don’t. That’s what makes them tricky.
Possible symptoms include:
- Discharge from the penis, vagina, or anus
- Pain during urination or sex
- Sores, bumps, or rashes
- Itching or irritation
- Flu-like symptoms
However, many people show no symptoms at all and unknowingly spread infections to others. This is why regular testing is one of the best things you can do for yourself and your partners.

How Can I Get Tested?
Testing is quick, confidential, and available right here in Puerto Vallarta.
The Vallarta Gay+ Community Center offers low-cost STI testing in a supportive and stigma-free space. Testing may include:
- Urine sample
- Swabs (oral, rectal, or genital)
- Blood test
No judgment. Just care.
What If I Test Positive?
Don’t panic — most STIs are easily treatable with antibiotics or antiviral medications. We’ll connect you with a local LGBTQ+-affirming clinic or doctor who can provide treatment, and we’re here to support you through the process.
Untreated STIs can lead to complications, so early treatment is important—not just for you, but also for your future partners.
How Can I Prevent STIs?
There are many ways to stay safer while staying sexually active:
- Use condoms or dental dams for all types of sex
- Get tested every 3–6 months if you’re sexually active
- Use protection with sex toys and clean them properly
- Get vaccinated for HPV and hepatitis B
- Talk openly with your partners about testing and protection
Also consider PrEP, which helps prevent HIV, and PEP if you’ve had a recent high-risk exposure.
Why This Matters in Puerto Vallarta
Our city is filled with love and freedom, but that doesn’t mean we forget our responsibilities. Maintaining our sexual health is one way we care for ourselves and one another.
At the Vallarta Gay+ Community Center, we’re proud to offer a safe and welcoming space where you can ask questions, get tested, and find resources—all with kindness and confidentiality.
