As the summer heat builds, so does the risk of tropical storms and hurricanes along Mexico’s Pacific Coast. Being prepared in Bahía de Banderas—including the greater Puerto Vallarta area—can make all the difference. That’s why the municipal government has designated several Temporary Shelters (Refugios Temporales) across the region for community safety and support during emergency weather events.
Below is a full list of officially designated shelters by location. These facilities are primarily schools and community centers that will open in the event of an emergency. Be sure to locate the one nearest to your home:

- Identify the closest shelter to your home.
- Prepare a “go bag” with essentials: medications, ID, water, flashlight, and copies of documents.
Follow weather alerts from official sources.
- Keep your mobile phone charged and share emergency contacts with family or neighbors.
- Avoid crossing rivers, flooded streets, or staying in high-risk zones during storms.
- If your area is prone to flooding, visit a shelter or a family or friend’s home.
Did You Know?
Puerto Vallarta and Bahía de Banderas have one of coastal Mexico’s most organized emergency response systems. Thanks to collaboration between municipalities and civil agencies, shelter infrastructure is ready to activate when needed, especially during hurricane season (June to November).
Stay safe, stay informed, and find the nearest shelter and visit it before the emergency event so you know how to get there quickly.
